Copyediting and Proofreading

Copyediting is the painstaking revision of a manuscript to ensure that not only is it error-free, but also that the writing is clear, coherent, consistent—and ready for publication in a peer-reviewed international journal. The focus is on correcting errors in grammar, spelling, syntax and punctuation, as well as rephrasing awkward, repetitive or confusing sentences, all while ensuring that the authors’ intended meaning is not altered in any way.

Most journals provide a style guide for authors. If you have already decided on a target journal, then part of the copyediting process is ensuring that the article adheres to journal specifications. These generally cover elements such as referencing style (APA, Harvard, MLA etc.), headings, abbreviations, capitalization, hyphenation, use of inclusive language, voice (active or passive), and so on.

If it is the first time your English-language article has been submitted to the journal, or if the journal has requested major revisions, then you need copyediting services. In later rounds of the peer review process and for a final check, you need proofreading services. Proofreading involves checking the text for any typos, grammatical mistakes or inconsistencies introduced during successive rounds of revision and resubmission.

To date, I have edited or translated more than 900 academic articles for publication in in reputable peer-reviewed journals. See what my satisfied clients have to say...
